Snoball:Just 3 weeks away

To all of the GHS students out there, just in case you haven’t heard the multiple announcements about Snoball,it is in just under three weeks and is girl ask guy. (Boys, this doesn’t mean you are off the hook.) Good luck out there!

Oh,the Places GHS Students Will Go:Kentucky

Not many people can say that they have participated at a national competition but for one Gresham High School student, she can say she definitely did. Student Shannon Ernst participated in the National 4-H competition for horse judging in early November. The event was held in Louisville,Kentucky where over 330 people competed in five different events. Each individual went with a team representing their state. Thirty one states were represented including Alaska,Washington,Oregon,Idaho,Wisconsin,Indiana,Florida,Alabama, and many more.

The Oregon team flew out early to experience the extent of the Kentuckian horse country. While there, the team spent two days at the world known Kentucky Horse Park which played host to the World Equestrian Games in 2010,visited stud farms, and enjoyed the southern hospitality of the state. On competition day,the team judged a multitude of horses and disciplines ranging from reining to three-gaited Saddlebreds. In the end,the judging team didn’t take home any awards but each person was ranked nationally, with Ernst coming in 26 out of 88,only missing being in the top twenty five by a point.
With the new season coming up,what is next for this team?
“My team is definitely becoming prepared for next year. We are fully intent on going back and having another go at it,” says Ernst.

Students Succeed with Google

Screen cast of the edits made by Jordan Bures.

Telling a major corporation that they are wrong is tough. Having the same corporation admit they are wrong and absorb your input, that is a great honor. A handful of students did just that in Mr. Walker’s Web Design class.

During the Thoughtful Footprint Project the students were tasked with either making a change to Google Places,a change to Google Maps,or making a change to Google Building Maker. The students began by scouring the community to locate flaws in all three of these sights. Many were able to determine issues with business hours or placement of business. Others were able to have entire business and places revised.Students such as Jordan Bures, who was very excited to receive an e-mail from Google Maps.

“‘Your change has been Approved by Google Reviewer Kody,a trusted reviewer and has gone live.’ This was part of the e-mail I got from Google Maps, approving my changes,” states Bures.

Bures changes included the payment types, type of place and county for a building on East Powell Boulevard in Gresham,Oregon.

Another student who was able to make a big change was Brandon Falvey, who realised that Google had overlooked a new State Farm Insurance building that had popped up on Powell. He sent in the change and it was approved within days.

Through this project, many students were able to successfully interact with Google and walk away with a different kind of experience. They also walked away with the sweet knowledge of knowing that they can make a difference in a big corporation such as Google.

Success with Google:Part 1 of 2

Recently some Gresham High School students set out to correct Google. These are their stories.

  • I told Google all the info on a place was wrong,I submitted a change, and it has yet to be approved or denied. I think that they are waiting for new pictures of that street to come in because the picture is of the old place, but the old place was torn down, and now it’s a new building, the building isn’t quite finished though,so it may take a while before my update is accepted. -Kit Vandenbroeke
  • We recently did a project called the Thoughtful Footprint Project. We had to try and make a place, map,or map maker change to Google. I found a new location on Google Maps that needed to be placed on Google Places. The business was a new Auto Zone store just recently opened in Gresham. The changes I added to the map were accepted by Google a day later and went live onto Google Maps. For maps I have made a change to my old middle school bus route coming out of the school. The map was declined because there was not enough information to put on google. For Map Maker I found a rectangular building and made it 3D to fit on Google Earth. I made the 3D model and added street view sides on it and I submitted it for approval. Recently I received a email and that it has gone live on Google. -Alex Carr

Quote of the Day

From One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the quote of the day:“Work was like a stick. It had two ends. When you worked for the knowing you gave them quality;when you worked for a fool you simply gave them eyewash.”Take from it what you will. Quotes are not posted to offend but merely to point out a possibly witty idea.
