School Days by the Numbers

Well, students are back at school today in Gresham after a freak snow storm. The snow melted off after a few hours and now the city is being drenched with rain. The irony is that the district already had a budget reduction day on Tuesday and a day off for Martin Luther King day on Monday. So a four-day weekend turned into a five-day weekend and the three-day week turned into a two-day week with the Friday assembly canceled. The week after this one is semester final week,so all of the days are half days any way. So what does this mean for the month of January? Students in Gresham-Barlow were in school for ten days (excluding semester final week). What does that mean for the students’education? Talk to the teachers, they’ll tell you the truth about January.

Back to School

Welcome back everyone! The semester is not yet over and this is now the time where teachers cram the most on you to make up for earlier in the semester. While you are worrying about that make sure to take note that the weather outside is awfully warm for this time of year and that the east winds have not yet taken you off the face of the Earth. Enjoy my peers, they say these are the days that we are going to miss.

Holiday Bliss

It’s the holiday season and people are bustling around trying to get all of their shopping done for the commercialism of the season. What about the “true”meaning of the season though? Is it really only about buying the gifts and giving them to people? Or is it truly about family and friends coming together to support one another in the darker months of the year? A poll that was done back in 2006 says that most people (79%) wished that the holidays were less materialistic. However the report went on to say that 59% of people acquired debt during the holiday season of 2005. Granted, these statistics are old,but they still hold merit. Black Friday is quickly turning into Black Thursday with many stores starting there deals at midnight and some even on Thanksgiving day. If people want less materialism, why are they continuing to give retailers reasons to open shop early? Point being, there is still a war:materialism or family? What a question.

Snoball:Just 3 weeks away

To all of the GHS students out there, just in case you haven’t heard the multiple announcements about Snoball,it is in just under three weeks and is girl ask guy. (Boys, this doesn’t mean you are off the hook.) Good luck out there!

Students Succeed with Google

Telling a major corporation that they are wrong is tough. Having the same corporation admit they are wrong and absorb your input, that is a great honor. A handful of students did just that in Mr. Walker’s Web Design class.

During the Thoughtful Footprint Project the students were tasked with either making a change to Google Places,a change to Google Maps,or making a change to Google Building Maker. The students began by scouring the community to locate flaws in all three of these sights. Many were able to determine issues with business hours or placement of business. Others were able to have entire business and places revised.Students such as Jordan Bures, who was very excited to receive an e-mail from Google Maps.

“‘Your change has been Approved by Google Reviewer Kody,a trusted reviewer and has gone live.’ This was part of the e-mail I got from Google Maps, approving my changes,” states Bures.

Bures changes included the payment types, type of place and county for a building on East Powell Boulevard in Gresham,Oregon.

Another student who was able to make a big change was Brandon Falvey, who realised that Google had overlooked a new State Farm Insurance building that had popped up on Powell. He sent in the change and it was approved within days.

Through this project, many students were able to successfully interact with Google and walk away with a different kind of experience. They also walked away with the sweet knowledge of knowing that they can make a difference in a big corporation such as Google.
